The week leading up to holiday break was filled with festive celebrations at the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences. On December 19, DAAS Pre-K students, staff and volunteers from a local church enjoyed a day of holiday themed activities, offering something special and memorable for every scholar.
The entire Pre-K building celebrated the season with their own unique activities prepared by teachers and volunteers. In many classrooms students engaged in crafts such as decorating cookies with frosting and sprinkles and creating Christmas ornaments with glue and glitter. With these projects, students were encouraged to engage in hands-on activities and express their creativity.
It was an exciting sight in Ms. Jones’ classroom as she surprised her students with Christmas presents. Smiles spread across all their faces as they opened fairy dolls and race cars. Across the hall, students put on a holiday performance wearing their favorite holiday pajamas and sunglasses while dancing to “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.”
The theme in several of the classes was inspired by the holiday classic movie The Polar Express. Students built and designed trains out of cardboard boxes and gift wrapping paper to resemble the train heading to the North Pole in the movie. At noon in Ms. Fortune’s class, students enjoyed a bag of popcorn and watched The Polar Express in their classroom.
Ms. Chuvelski, the principal of the Pre-K building, emphasized how important it was that each scholar, no matter their background, could feel the warmth and joy of the holiday season.
